BYU Professor, 1976-1988 (resigned in 1988 over disputes with BYU administrators over academic freedom.) While at BYU, Dr. Quinn was  Director of Graduate Program, History.

Excommunicated from the Utah Church in 1993. Regarding his failure to attend his final disiplinary council, he wrote: "I vowed I would never again participate in a process which was designed to punish me for being the messenger of unwanted historical evidence and to intimidate me from further work in Mormon history."

1997 American Historical Association Best Book by an Independent Scholar, for "Same-Sex Dynamics among Nineteenth-Century Americans: A Mormon Example".

Resides in southern California.
